Prof. Stefan Tangermann on The Future of Europe’s Agricultural Policy
About the Event:
The European Commission released its legislative proposals for a major overhaul of the Common Agricultural Policy on 12 October 2011. The major components of the proposals include a reform of the direct payments system to make it more equitable across member states and the ‘greening’ of direct payments, whereby 30% of payments will be devoted to environmentally supportive practices. At this event, leading agricultural economist, Prof Stefan Tangermann, will assess the Commission’s proposals.
About the Speaker:
Stefan Tangermann is a leading expert on agricultural policy and trade reform. A former Director for Trade and Agriculture at the OECD from 2002 to 2008, he is now professor emeritus at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development at the University of Göttingen, Germany.
Professor Tangermann was the author of a major report on CAP reform for the European Parliament in 2011, which was critical of the proposed reforms.
